Sweet Home Jacksonville
This holiday season, visions of (preservative-free) sugarplums are dancing in the heads of local Jacksonville kids and adults with the opening of the new organic, all-natural candy store Sweet Pete’s, located in the historic Springfield neighborhood.
Upon arriving to Sweet Pete’s, you might think you’ve stepped into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory with the 100-year-old Victorian home, painted white with window trims in yellow, blue and red. Visitors who enter the candy shop are instantly inundated with the sights of brightly colored walls and a lamp that looks like a gumball machine, and, of course, the smells of cotton candy, chocolate and other sweet treats!
Sweet Pete’s is the brainchild of Peter Behringer and, yes, for those in the candy know, that is the “Peter” in Jacksonville-based Peterbrooke Chocolatier, so he has a lifetime of experience is the sweet treat business. (Read: I wouldn’t want to be up against him in a candy-making contest). The twist is that you won’t feel like you’re cheating since all of the products at Sweet Pete’s contain no artificial flavors, colors or high-fructose corn syrup, plus gluten free, vegan and organic sweets, vegan sundaes and 18 flavors of organic cotton candy.
Think healthier candy isn’t tasty? Think again! I participated in a good old-fashioned chocolate taffy pull party (similar to tootsie rolls) and, for the holidays, candy cane pull party…both delicious!!! With a private party room upstairs, other fun parties are available including a Chocolate Fondue Party and a Chocolate Wine Pairing Party, of which I can’t wait to grab my gal pals and try it out!
So with the addition of Sweet Pete’s to the city’s candy repertoire, I think the Jacksonville native sons of Lynyrd Skynyrd could have easily substituted their hometown into their classic “Sweet Home Alabama” just as well.
