Volunteers travel great distances for THE PLAYERS Championship
THE PLAYERS Championship in Ponte Vedra is without a doubt, one of Northeast Florida’s event highlights of the year. People from far and wide travel from across Florida and the U.S. to catch of glimpse of golfers Fred Funk, Jim Furyk and the infamous 17th island hole at the THE PLAYERS Stadium Course.
Juan Pollola might be one of the farthest to travel to see this event, but not only as a spectator. Pollola, a 56-year-old cardiologist and golf enthusiast from Argentina has been returning to the First Coast as a volunteer for THE PLAYERS Championship since 2008.
Pollola was made aware of the opportunity to volunteer for THE PLAYERS in 2007 through the PGA Tour and has since then as volunteered as the 17th hole chalet and 12th hole green marshal.
As a hole marshal, Pollola is in charge of managing the crowd, ensuring there are no distractions to the players as well as opening and closing the ropes at the spectator crosswalk and providing general information to spectators.
Pollola notes that his most memorable moment as a volunteer was when Angel Cabrera invited him to join his second round of practice after his win at the 2009 Masters.
Not too shabby.
