I Don’t Sweat, I Perspire
Yeah, right! This week, I attended a Dance Trance class with my friends Matilda and Lauren and it turned out to be one of the best workouts I’ve ever had. I believe this to be the case, because I was "perspiring" from every pore of my body.
As a former dancer and gymnast, I thought it would be a piece of cake. I mean, I’m coordinated and graceful, and the class combines hot music and even hotter dance moves. Piece of cake, it was not, but at least I had fun!
Defined as "fitness with an attitude," the technique provides music and dance movements that apply elements of hip-hop, funk, jazz and more.
I started with the Dance Trance Break Down, a good class to choose if you are a beginner or just unable to control your limbs. Jay Handline, the founder of the Dance Trance program and our dance sensei, first goes through the entire dance, then "breaks it down" step-by-step before going through the straight dance again.
Our class had a great selection of tunes (and routines to accompany them) from Jason Mraz to Beck and ending with a nice tribute to Halloween and the late Michael Jackson, with an original dance piece to "Thriller."
I did ok, (if I do say so myself), but there was something about the foot work that I just couldn’t master. At least my issues didn’t make me look like a spaz on the dance floor, a la Seinfeld‘s Elaine Benes.
Regardless of your finesse on the dance floor, you’ll get a great workout, and most importantly have a blast. While I was exhausted by the end of the class, I had a smile on my face the whole time. See?
(I promise…there’s a smile on my face, even if I collapsed on the floor!)
With locations throughout Florida and Alabama, home base is Jacksonville with two studios to choose from: Neptune Beach and San Marco. Most classes are $15 per class, but there are monthly rates and class cards for an even greater value.
AND, if you call Dance Trance and mention our site, "udontknowjax," you’ll get free admission to this Saturday’s Dance in the Dark at Ocean Club in Jacksonville Beach. The Oct. 24th event is a Dance Trance Class, followed by a club party. Costumes are encouraged. Call at 904-390-0939.
