Trivia allows time for fun, fellowship

Posted On: January 29, 2009 1:00 AM Posted By: Jacqueline Simard Related Subjects: Bars & Nightlife  Restaurants

Spencer is the history nerd. Brandon and Arielle cover anything and everything politics. Zach is the music and movie buff.

And then there’s me.

I consider myself to the "pop culture guru", but the team knows me as the "might not have all the right answers, but will never back down on an excuse to drink with her best friends" gal. Hey, it’s my cross to bear. And I do not mind bearing said cross.

I, self-proclaimed captain of team "Stop Watching Me, Sting" [formally team "Morningwood"] assembled this fine group of trivia patrons about a year and a half ago. Although we’ve had some players join, and subsequently leave due to a poor performance, it has always been, and will always be, the five of us.

Every Tuesday night at 8 p.m., the elite circle meets at Island Girl Cigar & Wine bar, off 9A and Gate Parkway for trivia night, hosted by JaxTrivia. We each plop down on one of the leather armchairs and huddle around our favorite table. We know the table we like, right by the humidor [the largest in Jacksonville], and if any amateur team takes our cherished spot, we make it our goal to totally annihilate the competition so that they may never step foot on our turf again. Freshman trivia players; they make it so easy.

Now I am not a cigar person what-so-ever. Granted, I don’t mind them, but they’re just not my thing. I’m more of, well, I’m a drinker. My father’s immaculate taste for wine has tainted any inkling of me liking anything but the finest. Island Girl fits my profile like Ripley’s fits an early 2007 Britney Spears.

Although I usually stick to a glass [or bottle, let’s not kid ourselves] of Riesling, I’m up for a little exploration now and then. I recently tried my first port wine this past Tuesday. Spencer, the history nerd, said it was infused with brandy. My only thought is, "Two alcohols in one glass? I’m in."

The grub isn’t bad either. Each team member has their favorite, mine being the lobster bisque, but it’s an unspoken agreement that when you order something at the trivia table, it is fair game for all.

Try-outs for the "sports mastermind" spot on team Stop Watching Me, Sting [hopefully you finally get the joke on second reference] will be this Tuesday at Island Girl Cigar and Wine Bar.

Warning: do not sit by the humidor or be prepared to taste our trivia lashing [goes well with their mango salsa]!
